How to price cakes

Professional cake makers usually quote per serving: a base price per slice for the flavour and finish, plus extras for complicated decoration. This scales cleanly from a 6-inch birthday cake to a three-tier wedding cake.

Step 1 – Find your base cost per serving

Cost one full recipe of sponge, filling and frosting in the calculator, set servings to the number of slices it yields, and include baking, filling, crumb-coating and frosting time. This gives a base cost per serving.

Step 2 – Use a serving chart

Round cake (4 in / 10 cm tall)Party servingsWedding servings
6 in (15 cm)1212
8 in (20 cm)20–2424
10 in (25 cm)28–3838
12 in (30 cm)40–5656

Party slices are roughly 1.5 × 2 in; wedding slices 1 × 2 in. Square cakes yield about 25% more.

Step 3 – Add design and complexity

Example

An 8-inch, two-layer chocolate cake: ingredients $14, boards & box $4, overhead $2, labor 3.5 h × $18 = $63. Total $83 ÷ 24 servings = $3.46 cost per serving; with 35% markup ≈ $4.65 per serving, or about $110 for the cake.

FAQ

How much should I charge per slice of cake?

Calculate your full cost per serving (ingredients, labor, overhead, packaging) and add a 30–60% markup. Simple buttercream cakes often sell at $3–$6 per serving; elaborate custom cakes for much more.

How many servings does an 8 inch cake have?

About 20–24 party servings or 24 wedding-size servings for a standard 4-inch-tall round cake.
